Japan Chablis wines make a comeback in the market

In 2020, white Bourgogne wines accounted for 36% of the volume of French AOCs exported to Japan corresponding to 53% of sales in this category. Bourgogne wines have a prestige reputation in Japan, a country whose culture, tastes, and values bear some relation to those of Bourgogne.

Chablis wines reach a new sales record in 2020. Following the fine harvest of 2018 and the greater volume available with the 2020 harvest, Chablis exports returned to the growth pattern that began in 2019. However, only the Petit Chablis and Chablis AOCs display growth in volume and in sales.

The proportion of Chablis in Bourgogne wine exports (all colors) is 29% by volume and 18% by sales in 2020.

Chablis wines are securely entrenched in traditionnal and ongoing markets, as restaurants and wine shops, in Tokyo.
