29 medal-winning wines at the 36th Chablis Wine Competition

For the second year running, the Chablis Wine Competition was held in exceptional circumstances due to the ongoing health crisis. However, the event went ahead nonetheless, thanks to a strict protocol to ensure the safety of the tasting panel.

It took place on 15 January 2022 in Beine, under the presidency of Guillaume Baroin, journalist, wine-lover, gourmet, and faithful fan of Bourgogne wines.

This competition is unusual in that the professionals entering their wines are not allowed to be jury members. The panel is made up from journalists, restaurateurs, sommeliers, wine traders, oenologists, winegrowers, and enlightened amateurs. The wines go through two rounds of tasting, and those that score highest on the first round, when they are sampled by the entire jury, are then put before a “super” jury, which selects the medal-winners.

This year, the 44 jury members will be sampling Petit Chablis, Chablis, and Chablis Premier Cru appellations from the 2020 vintage, and Chablis Grand Cru from 2019. They awarded medals to 29 wines from a total of 262 samples submitted.

Guillaume Baroin, president of the 36th Chablis Wine Competition

Guillaume Baroin began his career as a sales agent for wine corks. He made the shift into wine journalism in 1998 when he joined Magnum Vinum, before taking up the role of regional correspondent 2001 for Cuisine & Vins de France. In 2007, he began working with the Revue du Vin de France, joining the team in 2013. He then spent two years working for the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France, before leaving the magazine at the end of 2019.
In parallel, Guillaume Baroin has been a writer for the Hachette wine guide since the 2010 edition and continues to work freelance for national and regional publications. He has also acted as technical advisor on various films about wine including “Premiers Crus” (2015) and “Intraitable” (2021).
In 2020 he joined forces with a photographer and videographer friend to launch an online magazine about Bourgogne, Beaujolais, and Jura wines: www.lesbuvologues.com, “the website about wines to drink and dishes to savor”.
