24 medal-winning wines at the 37th Chablis Wine Competition

The Chablis Wine Competition took place on January 14, 2023, in Chablis, under the presidency of the noted Bourgogne wine expert Jasper Morris.

This competition is unusual in that the professionals entering their wines are not allowed to be jury members. The panel is made up from journalists, restaurateurs, sommeliers, wine traders, oenologists, winegrowers, and enlightened amateurs. The wines go through two rounds of tasting, and those that score highest on the first round, when they are sampled by the entire jury, are then put before a “super” jury, which selects the medal-winners.

This year, the 71 jury members will be sampling Petit Chablis, Chablis, and Chablis Premier Cru appellations from the 2021 vintage, and Chablis Grand Cru from 2020. They awarded medals to 24 wines from a total of 259 samples submitted.

Jasper Morris, president of the 37th Chablis Wine Competition

Jasper Morris is British and from a family of lawyers. His passion for wine led him to a career as a négociant (wine merchant). He started his own business, Morris & Verdin Ltd, in 1981 and became a Master of Wine in 1985. Mr. Morris is especially passionate about Bourgogne wines. In 1991 he moved to Côte d’Or and published the first edition of his book Au coeur de la Bourgogne in 2010. After selling his company to Berry Bros & Rudd in 2003, he worked there until 2017 before retiring from sales. He then launched his website Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (www.insideburgundy.com) dedicated to Bourgogne wines, to share his knowledge and expertise with amateurs.
In 2016, Jasper Morris was named consultant for Christie’s and then for Sotheby’s in connection with the Hospices de Beaune wine auction.
In 2021 he published the second edition of his book Au coeur de la Bourgogne.
In 2023 he has agreed to preside the Concours des Vins de Chablis.
